google self drivingThat upstart tech company Google is one that rarely experiences a public relations blemish. And then they decided that the future–nay, the present!–was ready for a self-driving car.

From science fiction to virtual reality, Google is always on the prowl for ways to push the boundaries of the Internets and use the Web to make life “easier” for the rest of us simpletons.

News is out that Chris Urmson, the company’s principal engineer and software lead for Google’s self-driving cars, wrote a blog post on Medium detailing the most recent collision, which occurred during the evening rush hour of July 1.

thelovebugThis won’t end well:

Our self-driving cars are being hit surprisingly often by other drivers who are distracted and not paying attention to the road. That’s a big motivator for us.

The most recent collision, during the evening rush hour on July 1, is a perfect example. One of our Lexus vehicles was driving autonomously towards an intersection in Mountain View, CA.

The light was green, but traffic was backed up on the far side, so three cars, including ours, braked and came to a stop so as not to get stuck in the middle of the intersection. After we’d stopped, a car slammed into the back of us at 17 mph — and it hadn’t braked at all.

Got it. The car without someone in the driver’s seat is not guilty because of all those dimwit bottleneckers trying to look for the six-year-old not sitting on the stack of phone books. You see, even thought the cars drive itself, traffic laws do insist a driver to sit behind the wheel at all times. Just in case of those pesky potholes or something.

Why not? There was KITT from Knight Rider, that space hooptie from ‘The Jetsons,’ and cute little Herbie the Love Bug, so this had to be the craze for the next generation.

One problem Google: Those talking points are busted. PR to the white courtesy phone please.
